The Prison and Probation Service has treatment programs in violence, relationship crimes, sexual offenses, crime as well as abuse and dependence. The Prison and Probation Service is also working with preparatory efforts to motivate the client to participate in treatment programs. After a completed treatment program there are efforts of reinforcing content. All the treatment programs, except the 12-step program, are based on cognitive behavioral therapy, KBT. This means that the participant gets help to gain insight into their behaviors and learns ways to make a change for themselves. During the first meetings in a treatment program, the participants’ problems are mapped and together with the program manager they try to find destructive behavior patterns. You then do exercises, often through role play, and work out problem solving and strategies for the situations that the participants easily end up in. Often the participants in group programs have great help from each other. A treatment program always ends with program leaders and participants working out individual plans with realistic goals. The programs are implemented both in groups and individually between the program manager and the client. Most programs are aimed at both men and women, but there are programs that target only men or women only. The Prison Service develops its own treatment programs, but most are from other countries, such as Canada and the United Kingdom, and are adapted to Swedish conditions.
